To stave off the onset of jet lag, I decided to go for a wander from the Fortress, and have a nose around the area.
I'd seen on Google Maps that there was a coastal path around the peninsula where BM lives, so headed down the road to meet it.
Weather wise the first day was a mix of showers and drizzle, but mild enough in temperature to only need a light jacket. The path switched between gravel and wooden walkways, twisting and hugging the coastline, past the gardens of wooden houses, alongside parks, and even in the drizzle it was nice to be out exploring already.
I spoke on the phone with my buddy Marc, who's down in Wellington, having a catch up and planning what we're going to get up to, when after strolling around a corner in the path, deep in conversation, I was stopped dead in my tracks. There in front of me, across the water was the Auckland skyline, caught by the sun in a break in the clouds. That was my 'sure ain't in Kansas Toto' moment, I was here, and there was something big that made it sink in. The photo doesn't do the view justice, but I've a feeling it's going to be hard to capture what I'm seeing, and how it makes me feel in any format.
After finishing the chat with Marc, I sat for a while and took the view in, before heading back to the house. The first sudden sight of Auckland's skyline I suppose you could say was one of the big things that make you realise where you are, the second thing was one of the smaller things, that makes the familiar seem... well, not.
This was as I headed away from the coastal path, on a lamppost was a 'Tsunami Evacuation Route' sign. Yeah, that's not a normal thing for me, I'm from Reading, not much need for Tsunami Evac signs there..
Back to the house & rest, but not sleep. I wanted to stay awake as long as I could to try and control any Lag. This was helped a great deal by BM getting a couple of friends over to say hi, and quaff some Vodka with us.
A great evening, a great introduction to a county, BMs lovely friends and a whole new world.
